Clay

Spreadsheet-native data enrichment and GTM automation platform that unifies 75+ data providers behind one AI-driven workflow engine.

Technical Overview & Architecture

Clay is a horizontal data orchestration layer for revenue teams that reimagines the spreadsheet as a programmable interface over dozens of third-party data APIs. Each row in a Clay table represents an entity (company, person, deal) and each column can invoke an HTTP request, a native integration (Clearbit, Apollo, Hunter, LinkedIn Sales Navigator scraping, BuiltWith, etc.), a formula, or a call to Claygent—Clay's built-in LLM agent that can browse the web, read PDFs, and reason over unstructured data to fill in a cell. The underlying architecture treats enrichment as a waterfall: a column can be configured to try Provider A, fall back to Provider B if the confidence score is low, and finally fall back to an AI web-search agent, all without custom glue code. Operationally, Clay sits between a company's CRM/CDP (Salesforce, HubSpot, Attio) and its outbound tooling (Outreach, Instantly, Smartlead, Clay's own sending), acting as the enrichment and orchestration layer that keeps records fresh and personalizes messaging at scale. Tables support webhooks in and out, native API endpoints for pushing/pulling records programmatically, scheduled recurring runs, and a formula language (similar to Excel/Google Sheets syntax) for data transformation. Integrations are exposed through a visual UI rather than raw SDKs, though power users interact with the platform via its REST API, webhook triggers, and Zapier/Make connectors for embedding Clay workflows into broader engineering stacks. The primary audience is revenue operations engineers, growth/GTM engineers, and technical marketers who need to build custom data pipelines (lead scoring, ICP filtering, signal-based outbound, CRM deduplication and hygiene) without standing up their own ETL infrastructure or paying for a dozen separate point-solution subscriptions. It is not a system of record itself—it's designed to feed enriched, deduplicated, AI-qualified data into whatever CRM or CDP a team already runs.
